PISCATAWAY – Rutgers football is just past the midway point of training camp with its season opener against Howard about two weeks away.
The Scarlet Knights have played one scrimmage with another coming up on Saturday, their next chance to game into a game-like setting – an important experience for the quarterbacks with the addition of helmet communication starting this season.
There aren’t too many unknowns with Greg Schiano’s team at this point. We know what the bulk of the defense will look like, we know Rutgers has a stud running back in Kyle Monangai and we know Athan Kaliakmanis is the starting quarterback.
But here are five questions that, right now, remain unanswered:
1. What will Tyreem Powell’s availability be for the start of the season?
The star linebacker is recovering from the torn Achilles he suffered during the winter – an injury he suffered while he was also recovering from the broken wrist he suffered in the win over Indiana last season.
Schiano said in June that the expectation was that Powell would be ready for the season. But at this point, it’s unclear whether that will happen.
What we do know is that Dariel Djabome and Moses Walker were working with the first-team linebackers, Schiano said following Saturday’s scrimmage, because Powell and Mohamed Toure “are still recovering.”
Whether Powell’s status for the Howard game changes remains to be seen. Right now it’s a big question hovering over the defense.
2. Who will emerge as the starting wide receivers?
What we know: Rutgers has solid options at this position. Schiano has spoken highly about how Monmouth transfer Dymere Miller has looked. He said that along with Miller, Ian Strong also played well in the first scrimmage. Christian Dremel, the team’s leading receiver in 2023, also returns, while Naseim Brantley is available…
