On ESPN college football reporter Bill Connelly’s final 2024 preseason SP+ rankings – “a tempo- and opponent-adjusted measure of college football efficiency” that predicts the best teams in the sport heading into the season – Ohio State remains near the top.
Connelly has the Buckeyes as his second-ranked team behind No. 1 Georgia and ahead of No. 3 Oregon, No. 4 Alabama and No. 5 Texas. According to the rankings, Ohio State has the No. 25 offense, the No. 2 defense and the No. 20-ranked special teams in the sport, with 65% of its production returning.
Ohio State also has 29.7% odds of winning the Big Ten.
But what about the teams Ohio State is set to face?
According to the final SP+ rankings, Ohio State is set to face three top-10 teams – No. 3 Oregon, No. 6 Penn State and No. 7 Michigan – along with the No. 1 defense in Iowa, and the No. 1 offense in the Ducks.
Western Michigan is the only team on Ohio State’s 2024 schedule not listed in the final SP+ rankings.
Ohio State opens the 2024 season against Akron at 3:30 p.m. Aug. 31 on CBS.
