The Giants suffered a potential blow to their offense on Tuesday, as rookie running back Tyrone Tracy went down with an apparent ankle injury.
According to reporters in attendance, Tracy was working on a kickoff drill when he went down untouched. His right ankle was put in an air cast and he was carted off the field.
Tracy was selected by the Giants in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft after playing college ball at both Iowa and Purdue.
A former receiver who converted to running back ahead of the 2023 season, the thought was that Tracy, who had 2,148 yards from scrimmage and 15 touchdowns as a college player, could be a receiving threat out of the Giants backfield. Both Tracy and Eric Gray were vying for playing time behind Devin Singletary, added this offseason to be the lead back.
In the preseason opener against the Detroit Lions, Tracy ran the ball five times for 26 yards, including a 12-yard pickup.
Time will tell the severity of Tracy’s injury, but for now it takes a promising player off the field during what is a pivotal time for all rookies.
