5 Arizona State football players ready to break out

The Arizona State Sun Devils are 11 practices into fall camp as they prepare for their Aug. 31 game against Wyoming. There have been practices in which the offense went full throttle and yet other times the defense has excelled.

Overall coach Kenny Dillingham is pleased with what he has seen from his squad. He was so satisfied with how hard the team worked through an intense practice on Monday he rewarded his team by having Tuesday’s drills inside the Verde Dickey Dome rather than outside in the heat.

Let’s take a look at a handful of players who have been the biggest standouts so far.

LB Keyshaun Elliott (Jr., 6-2, 230)

This was a big area of need and the Sun Devils landed Elliott out of the transfer portal. He was the leading tacker and a second-team All-Conference USA selection last season at New Mexico State. He also proved durable, playing more than 900 snaps. Dillingham praised the newcomer after Saturday’s scrimmage at Camp Tontonzona.

“He’s so smart,” Dillingham said. “I asked the guys who was the first person’s alarm to go off in the room and it was Keyshaun’s. You can’t outwork him. You can’t outsmart him. And now he is the best pound-for-pound athlete on our football team. So if you can’t outwork him, you can’t outsmart him, then pound for pound he’s your best player and then on top of that he’s just a really good person. That’s a guy you want next to you when you take the field.”

RB Kyson Brown (So., 6-0, 200)

The running back room looks deep this season with veteran Cameron Skattebo leading the way and newcomers Alton McCaskill (Colorado) and Raleek Brown (USC) added to the mix. DeCarlos Brooks looks leaner and more physical and then there’s promising true freshman Jason Brown.
