EVANSVILLE — The Courier & Press sports reporters will be making daily predictions or observations on various high school football topics this week ahead of the 2024 season. Next up:
Which players in the Southern Indiana Athletic Conference and Pocket Athletic Conference have breakout potential in 2024?
Everyone knows who the top players will be. Every year, a handful of athletes join the conversation. These players, some already on the radar to varying degrees, from the SIAC and PAC could be next in line.

Kyle Sokeland: This is always a difficult exercise. For one, what is the criteria exactly for breakout potential? I’m foreseeing a big year from AJ Coates at Reitz. The junior linebacker occasionally got lost in the shuffle with all of that talent last season. His sophomore year (83 tackles) could just be a baseline, especially if he sees time in the backfield.
Also throw in Dylen Kendrick at Memorial. The junior gave the Tigers a jolt in the postseason with 100-yard rushing games against Reitz and East Central. Interested to see what he can do with a full season at whatever position John Hurley starts him.
Next, give me Gibson Southern quarterback Zach Foster. He was an All-PAC defensive back as a sophomore, so varsity experience isn’t an issue. It may take him time to adjust under center again – the Titans’ nonconference is tough again – but Gibson Southern always reloads at this position. Another PAC quarterback to keep an eye on is Grant Davis at Boonville. The junior did his job last year with 11 touchdowns to only five interceptions, but he’s one of the few returners for the Pioneers. He’ll be counted upon even more.
