What LSU football coach Brian Kelly said about WR Jelani Watkins’ injury

BATON ROUGE – Through the first 10 preseason practices, LSU football has been able to stay relatively and collectively healthy amid the tough sessions and the near-unbearable August heat.

While no starters have suffered any lingering injuries this fall camp, freshman wide receiver Jelani Watkins did sustain a foot injury early in Tuesday’s practice in a pylon drill when a defender landed on his foot and sat out the remainder of it. During the media viewing period Wednesday morning, Watkins was seen on crutches, wearing a walking boot on the sideline while LSU worked through the two-hour practice No. 11.

Following practice, Tigers head coach Brian Kelly told reporters that the freshman wide out suffered a “foot and ankle sprain” and that he does not expect Watkins to miss an extended period of time.

“We did an MRI so there’s no Lisfranc,” Kelly said Wednesday. “So this will be one where it’s a soft tissue injury. (LSU football senior associate athletic trainer Owen Stanley) and his team will get him back pretty quickly.”

Another longterm injury dodged for LSU.

Through the first couple of weeks of practice, Watkins had been working with the third- and fourth-string receiver group but where he looked like he could see some early playing time is in the return game, both kickoff and punt.

Kelly mentioned Watkins back in July during LSU’s day at the SEC Media Kickoff as one of the young, unknown guys on this season’s team that could possibly make a name for themselves and contribute.
