The biggest story at Jets training camp continues to be a player who has yet to even show up.
Edge rusher Haason Reddick, who formally requested to be traded on Monday, is still holding out for a new contract — one he hopes will pay him in the range of $25-28 million annually.
Just about everyone on the Jets, including head coach Robert Saleh, has been asked to give their take on Reddick’s holdout, and on Tuesday afternoon it was Aaron Rodgers’ turn to give his two cents.
While Rodgers said he doesn’t know Reddick very well personally, he did message the Temple product around the time of the trade, and he understands the situation.
“There are always new things in the league. I’ve been around 20 years, I’ve seen a lot of stuff,” Rodgers said. “I think as players we always try to first side with the player, because you know what it’s like to be a player.”
Selfishly, though, Rodgers said he thinks what’s best for Reddick is to be a member of this team.
“Obviously, we’d love for him to be here, but we don’t judge him for trying to do what’s best for him,” Rodgers explained. “I think what’s best for him is to be a Jet, because this is going to be a fun ride, but he’s got to make the best decision for him and his family.”
As SNY NFL Insider Connor Hughes has reported, Reddick has already forgoed a $250,000 workout bonus and received a $100,000 fine for skipping minicamp. He’s also been fined $50,000 per day for each day of training camp that he misses, which totals over $1 million at this point.
Jets general manager Joe Douglas has stated publicly that the team will not trade Reddick, who was just acquired in an April deal with the Philadelphia Eagles. So for now, things are at a stalemate, even with players like Rodgers saying they hope to see Reddick in the building soon.
