Alabama football’s Chris Kapilovic gives update on right tackle battle halfway through fall camp

At the halfway point of Alabama football’s fall camp, the position battle at right tackle is still ongoing, and it is one offensive line coach Chris Kapilovic said he sees going on for a while following the Crimson Tide’s Wednesday morning practice.

Wilkin Formby and Elijah Pritchett are the two contenders for the starting job. Formby has been seen taking reps with the first-team at practices with Pritchett lining up with the second-team.

“For both of those guys, we just need that consistency from them,” Kapilovic said on Wednesday. “Again, I see this competition going for a while.

“I think that Wilk does a great job of understanding the scheme of what we need to get accomplished, he makes some good calls and he has the tools to be a very good player. Pritchett, when he’s playing hard and kind of playing with a little bit of edge to him, he can be a physically dominating player. When that shows up, he does a really nice job of pass pro and in the run game. We are just looking for a little more push from Wilkin and a little more consistency from Pritchett.”

When asked, Kapilovic did not rule out the two rotating through the season rather than having just one guy taking majority of the reps.

“I think there’s a good chance (of them rotating),” Kapilovic said. “I’ve said this before, and I’ve done it throughout my career. If you got two guys battling, and they’re both battling at practice, and there’s not a clear difference between them, then there’s nothing wrong with playing both of them. Sometimes you got two guys playing, they’re both a little fresher throughout the game, and you’re getting a great right tackle with the two of them together combined.”
