Clemson football’s Dabo Swinney gives update on Shelton Lewis’ injury, other Tigers

CLEMSON — Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney announced Thursday cornerback Shelton Lewis suffered a lower-body injury during the team’s first scrimmage on Saturday at Memorial Stadium.

The sophomore defensive back was among the many players Swinney said got “banged-up” after the scrimmage, but the Tigers coach said he is day to day. Other players that fall into this category are cornerback Jeadyn Lukus and wide receiver Troy Stellato with both missing Thursday’s scrimmage. Swinney didn’t specific how long each would be out.

Lewis was battling for one of two starting cornerback positions this season with Avieon Terrell and Lukus. Lewis became a late-season starter last year, recording 10 tackles, nine pass deflections and two interceptions, including a pick six, through 13 games (with two starts).

Swinney also revealed redshirt sophomore cornerback Myles Oliver torn his ACL and has a pectoral injury, freshman offensive lineman Watson Young suffered a torn ACL and redshirt freshman offensive lineman Ian Reed injured his knee. All will miss the 2024 season. They were expected to provide depth to their respective position groups.

Clemson participated in its second scrimmage Thursday, and Swinney said the team exited with no injuries. It was the team’s final scrimmage before facing Georgia on Aug. 31 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
