With the college football season just nine days away from commencing with Week 0, the anticipation surrounding the newly expanded 12-team College Football Playoff model continues to gear up.
On Thursday, the College Football Playoff announced the six dates it will release its rankings during the upcoming college football season. The first one is set for Election Day on Tuesday, Nov. 5 starting at 7 p.m. ET.
Using preseason polls — including USA TODAY’s Coaches Poll — Big Ten programs such as Ohio State, Oregon, Penn State and Michigan are being seen by those within college football as legit contenders for a top spot in the playoff.

“It is always great to get everyone together before the season starts to welcome our new members and review our procedures in detail,” Michigan Athletic Director and CFP Committee Chair Warde Manuel said in a statement.
“The work of the College Football Playoff selection committee has a solid foundation with its processes and protocols, and the committee members are looking forward to ranking the top 25 teams this season as we kick off the first year of the 12-team format.”
Per the CFP’s press release Thursday, it noted that “conference champion” was removed from being considered a tiebreaker between comparable teams as the five highest-ranked conference champions are automatically given a spot in the 12-team playoff format.
