Aug. 16—BLOOMING GROVE — Jason Burnett may be the happiest football coach in the Golden Circle.
He’s back exactly where he wants to be after getting the head Coach/Athletic Director job at Blooming Grove, where he was the Lions Defensive Coordinator four years ago.
Burnett looks, sounds and feels like the perfect fit in the Grove.
“He’s going to be great,” said new Blooming Grove Superintendent John Griggs, a longtime popular assistant football coach at Corsicana who made the move to BG this year.
Griggs said when he hired Burnett there was no doubt in his mind that he had hired the right man for the job.
“When we finished the interview, he answered the final question by saying, ‘Nobody is going to love our kids like I do,’ “said Griggs, smiling with the memory.”
Those kids — like their new coach — believe they will be back in the playoffs this year with Burnett, a no-frills, honest, caring, look-you-in-the-eye coach who has already began building a bond with his players.
He’s got both feet on the ground ready to be a big part of the Grove community along with his wife, Leah, a former volleyball coach and his three children — Abby, a sophomore, Katie, an eighth grader, and Brady, a fourth grader.
“I’ve never been to a place twice,” said Burnett, who has coached in a long list of places in Texas for 24 years. “But this place is so special. I’ve always thought this place was special — the kids, the community. I’ve worked all over Texas. There’s not too many places that where the community comes together and supports the team like they do here. They support the team, regardless.
“Blooming Grove is such a great community,” Burnett said. “The kids are great, the parents are great and support everything here. They’ve got good coaches and the kids know how to go to work. I feel blessed, thankful and grateful to be…
