The news that Rutgers athletic director Pat Hobbs abruptly resigned Friday shook the department and shocked the college sports world, but at a time when the landscape is constantly evolving and changing, the immediate thought was clear.
Regardless, whomever becomes the full-time AD will oversee the department at a time when revenue sharing is coming to college sports and football, especially, continues to rule.

The importance of having an athletic director who understands and embraces Name, Image and Likeness is paramount.
The Scarlet Knights football program under Greg Schiano is rising, and in less than two weeks will begin a highly-anticipated season that some believe could rival the 11-2 campaign in 2006 that saw Rutgers achieve a No. 7 national ranking.

Schiano and Co. are also poised to welcome in a 2025 recruiting class that, so long as the commitments become official on Signing Day, could be the best in program history.
What Rutgers needs with next athletic director
The next athletic director must in lockstep with Schiano, willing to help build an infrastructure that gives the Scarlet Knights every opportunity to compete with the rest of the Big Ten from an NIL perspective.
And that doesn’t even include the construction of an indoor practice facility, which may not be as vital as it seemed just a few years ago, but is still crucial to the longterm future of the program’s success.
