Week 1 Preview | ‘A game people want to see’: LHAC heavyweights Penn Cambria, Richland meet in opener (with picks)

A year ago, both Penn Cambria and Richland had quarterbacks debut as their respective program’s varsity starter when the Panthers and Rams met in a season opener.

That first game provided a glimpse of two young passers who evolved into a pair of the region’s top playmakers as the season progressed.

“Last year, both teams had a young quarterback playing the game with our Grayson Mahla and Brady Jones at Penn Cambria,” Rams coach Brandon Bailey said. “Both of those guys played really well in that game and throughout the season.

“Both schools have returning quarterbacks and a plethora of skill players.”

Four years ago, the marching bands of Conemaugh Valley and Ferndale Area school districts combined with a co-op that formed a massive more than 80-person group that provides entertainment, energy and excitement to every weekend football game.

Richland edged Penn Cambria 26-21 at Herlinger Field in 2023, the first of nine straight wins. Penn Cambria rebounded with eight consecutive victories. Each team reached its respective District 6 title game and finished as runner-up – Richland in Class 2A and Penn Cambria in 3A.

Richland sophomore Mahla and Penn Cambria junior Jones are a year older and set for another chapter in a Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference rivalry as two experienced and talented teams meet at the Panthers’ home field.

The marquee game is among 15 season openers involving area squads Friday, with all kickoffs at 7 p.m. One area game will be played Saturday night.
