Whippets take 2nd annual Grant Milliron Game with a 40-14 victory over Madison

SHELBY — Brayden DeVito has some new friends this year.

With the graduation of record-setting receiver Issaiah Ramsey, Shelby’s quarterback is breaking in some new pass-catchers for the Whippets.

If Friday night is any indication, Shelby’s offense will be just fine.

DeVito passed for 402 yards and two touchdowns, spreading the ball around to a plethora of weapons, and ran for two more scores to lead the host Whippets to a 40-14 season-opening victory over Madison in the second annual Grant Milliron Game.

Milliron, a philanthropist through and through, meant so much to both communities. He passed away last year.

Shelby coach Rob Mahaney liked most of what he saw Friday night at the Whippet Athletic Complex.

“We learned that we have a lot of potential,” he said. “We have to continue to build and develop.”

Coming off a first-team, All-Ohio season, DeVito was in midseason form, scrambling to make plays down the field. He completed eight passes of at least 22 yards and ran for 67 yards.

“Brayden makes us go,” Mahaney said. “There’s times when stuff breaks down, and he’s able to make things happen that not a lot of high school football players can do. He’s a great leader, a tremendous worker.”‘

Among his new receivers, Brady Bowman stood out the most. The sophomore, the younger brother of Blaine Bowman, one of the best receivers in school history, caught seven passes for 119 yards, including a 33-yard touchdown. He also ran for a 2-yard score.

Senior Nic Eyster, expected to play a big role this season, recorded six receptions for 74 yards. Avery Lambert added three catches for 81 yards. His 50-yard touchdown put the Whippets on the board.
