Why FSU football’s offense fell flat in opener: Short yardage plays, missed opportunities

Florida State football opened the 2024 season with a surgical 75-yard scoring drive against Georgia Tech.

The drive gave an impression that the No. 10 ranked Seminoles offense could be on the cusp of a special week zero performance.

But a collection of missed opportunities and a lack of explosive plays ended FSU’s momentum as the Seminoles offense looked without an identity and fell flat in a 24-21 upset loss to Georgia Tech in Dublin, Ireland.

“At the end of the day we have to be more explosive,” FSU head coach Mike Norvell told reporters after the game. “We have to have that explosive element with a good group. We got explosive players so obviously we will have to continue to work and go get better at that.”

Lawrance Toafili’s 28-yard score on that opening drive was arguably the most explosive play for the Seminoles offense on Saturday.

The following drives featured a heavy dose of short passes from quarterback DJ Uiagalelei and run plays that couldn’t escape a swarming, confident Georgia Tech defense.

“I feel like as an offense there are some things we need to clean up,” Toafili said. “For the most part, we were operating. There are things we can learn from and get better from.”

“Just got to learn from our experience today.”

While Uiagalelei went 19/27, throwing for 193 yards, he rarely completed a pass that traveled more than five yards in the air, with some big yardage gains on screens and quick passes tallying up the yardage.

Uiagelelei finished the first half 12-14, with his average air yards per attempt coming in at -0.1 yards.
