The Giants are expected to rest the majority of their starters during Saturday night’s preseason finale against the Jets, according to ESPN’s Jordan Raanan.
Head coach Brian Daboll told reporters on Friday morning that the coaching staff would be making the final decision on whether or not they’d be playing following that afternoon’s practice.
Now it appears that they are comfortable with the work the group got in during their joint practice against Gang Green this week, as they’ll be sidelined in anticipation for the season opener.
Starting quarterback Daniel Jones played just one quarter in his return to the field last week against the Houston Texans and he struggled mightily, completing just 11 of his 18 passes while throwing two interceptions.
With Jones likely sidelined in this one, and injured backup Drew Lock (hip) only being leaned on in an emergency, it’ll present a big opportunity for Tommy DeVito to solidly his spot on the roster.
The local kid impressed down the stretch last season filling in for the injury Jones and struggling backup Tyrod Taylor, competing 64 percent of his passes and throwing eight touchdowns across his six starts.
DeVito has put together a strong first two games in the preseason as well, and he appears to have the opportunity to play the full game as he looks to show Big Blue that they should keep him around.
“It’s not in my hands,” he said. “So for me, it’s just to continue every time I’m out on the field to show why I proved that I belong somewhere in the NFL. I want to be with the Giants, but when I’m out there on the field, I just continue to try to go out and get better each day.”
