The Giants cut 10 players — wide receiver Ayir Asante, defensive lineman Kyler Baugh, cornerbacks Breon Borders and Christian Holmes, defensive back Clayton Isbell, wide receiver John Jiles, running back Joshua Kelley, linebacker Trey Kiser, running back Lorenzo Lingard and offensive lineman Marcus McKethan — among Sunday’s initial moves, as the crunch for a 53-man roster begins before Tuesday’s 4 p.m. deadline.
“Obviously, there are more to come,” said Giants coach Brian Daboll. “But we’re not at that point — we’re still discussing a lot of things, but those were 10 players that we moved on from. Thank them for their contributions and wish them well.”
McKethan, 24, was a fifth-round pick (No. 173 overall) out of North Carolina by the Giants in the 2022 NFL Draft — New York’s first with Joe Schoen as the general manager.
The 6-foot-7, 335-pound McKethan logged 16 games — including four starts, with four coming at right guard and one on the left side — as a second-year pro during the 2023 season.
Among the Giants’ lingering decisions is whether or not New York will carry three quarterbacks, with Tommy DeVito behind starter Daniel Jones and backup Drew Lock.
“There’s a ton of different conversations that happen, not just with the quarterback, but with every position,” said Daboll, who added earlier in the media availability that he thinks “Drew will be OK” coming back from a hip injury and how he has “confidence in Tommy.”
“So we’ll try to do what we think is best with the 53, and that 53 is ever-evolving. Those change, too. So we’ll sit down with the coordinators, and Joe and I will sit down with the personnel staff. We’ve done a lot of that this morning. We made the decision to move on from 10 players, and there’s still quite a bit more that we have to discuss and make sure that, again, the 53 that we keep are the right 53.”
