FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Rans runs wild as Pioneer routs Lewis Cass

It was all Pioneer in the Panthers’ 42-14 win against Lewis Cass Friday night at Owens Memorial Field.

Junior quarterback Micah Rans had a five-touchdown game for the Panthers (1-0). He rushed for 95 yards on 18 carries and four touchdowns. He added a 68-yard punt return for a score.

Noah Van Meter rushed for 117 yards and a TD on 17 carries. Freshman Phillip McFatridge ran in a 2-point conversion and was 4-for-4 on extra points.

Rans was 1 of 4 passing with a 12-yard completion to Van Meter.

Eli Guffey had 14 tackles, four tackles for a loss, a sack and two forced fumbles to lead the Pioneer defense. Fletcher Smith had a sack. Liam Rouch forced a fumble. McFatridge, Brady Price and Mason Shaver each recovered a fumble.

Pioneer coach Adam Berry talked to WHZR’s Milt Hess and Gage Cripe following the game.

“We always talk, I don’t care what sport it is, you’re never going to play a perfect game. Kids are going to make mistakes. They’re 15 to 18 year olds, they’re going to make mistakes. But we always say, if you play hard, we can work with you. And I feel like every person that we put out there tonight played hard,” Berry said. “I’m so proud of how we played. We gave up a big run, gave up a touchdown, then we responded.

“It was just a great night for Pioneer football.”

Berry talked about Rans’ big game.

“Even freshman year he was showing he was slippery. He was slippery as a freshman and then those first five weeks last year was, OK, I think we’re finding something. And then tonight, he hit that first big run and that was huge. At one time I was like, ‘does Micah have all of our touchdowns?’ And someone said, ‘yeah, he does.’”

Pioneer led 13-0 after one quarter, 28-6 at halftime and 35-6 after three.
