Talented Petoskey football team brings excitement that’s ready to burst out Friday night

PETOSKEY — A lot of football coaches will try to temper their expectations and enthusiasm for their team at the start of the season.

Are they excited to get after it? Of course. Are their goals just as lofty as the players putting on the pads? You bet they are. But it’s a little harder to get it out of them than the actual players. They hold back a bit.

When you talk to Petoskey head football coach Jim Webb, there’s something in his voice entering the 2024 season that feels like all that excitement is just itching to burst out.

If so, Webb has good reason. This is his most experienced and talented team in his three years at PHS and it’s looked like it all offseason.

“The unity and enthusiasm is there,” Webb said. “Not just from this guy or that guy, it’s the entire team. You never know how that’s going to go, but you want to make sure it’s there through the good and the bad. We’re going to have our backs against the wall and we need that same type of unity and enthusiasm. They’re obviously a very competitive group and there’s a ton of experience there.”

On Friday night, Webb and his Northmen get the chance to show that experience when they kick off the 2024 season at 7 p.m. at Northmen Stadium against Greenville.

Petoskey’s Korbin Sulitis has been a force on the defensive side for a couple seasons, now he’ll bring that talent to the offense as well while leading the team at QB.

They’ve already had the chance to hit someone else, doing so in a scrimmage against Mount Pleasant and Swan Valley late last week. Out of that, Webb’s excitement only grew.

“We came out injury free, so that was a plus. We played well, I can’t lie,” he said. “Overall, I was pretty happy. You always walk away with some things to work on and no exceptions. It was fun to see them. They were into it and into it the…
