Now that preseason is over, it’s a good time to review how the Giants’ rookie class has fared throughout training camp and in the three preseason games.
Nabers has had a sensational training camp and has the coaching staff, fan base, and his teammates excited about his potential to be elite almost immediately due to his dominance in practice. While he went without a catch in the first preseason game, the Giants made a point of looking for him in the first half of the second game and he was productive with four catches for 54 yards. Involving him early and often should be one of their primary objectives this season.
Nubin has been in the mix to start at safety, although the Giants are currently listing Dane Belton and Jason Pinnock as starters. All three rested for the final preseason game against the Jets. Nubin has impressed with his physicality in preseason, despite not actually registering any statistics.
Phillips has a good chance to be the starting nickel back this year. He’s currently listed on the first unit, according to the team’s unofficial depth chart. However, he suffered a setback a few weeks ago when he hurt his ankle and has only just returned to practice. He played just seven defensive snaps in preseason.
The Giants don’t have much quality depth at the tight end position, so Johnson had a realistic opportunity to carve out a role for himself. However, he has been underwhelming in camp, catching just one short pass in preseason. His best chance to make an impact was probably in the joint practice with the Jets when he got behind Sauce Gardner for a potential big play, only to drop the pass.
Tracy got off to a strong start in camp and looks capable of contributing as a runner, return man and pass catcher. After an injury scare saw him carted off, only for the injury to be less serious than previously thought, he should be ready for Week 1.
