SENIOR LIGHTS: Area seniors ready for final football season

Aug. 28—It doesn’t matter where you’re from — big city or small town — you have a following in the bleachers on Friday nights cheering your name as you take the football field.

You have a group of peers who may be your best friends, or maybe they aren’t, but they are a part of a brotherhood you get to be close to for an entire football season.

From the fans and players to coaches and more, a big part of your high school career is playing for and with these people. How does it impact you?

“With the rich tradition and class with Seneca, I’ll say it until I’m blue in the face, there’s no better place to play football in Missouri than in Seneca,” Seneca senior Nolan Napier said. “The atmosphere is crazy, our whole town revolves around Friday nights.”

Southwest Missouri has plenty of football towns where it seems fans live for Friday nights. This video is of the song “Boys of Fall” by Kenny Chesney with a pregame speech from NFL coach Sean Payton at the beginning. Payton speaks to a group of football players about those feelings of Friday night, playing with your boys, playing for the hometown fans and even those feelings of only having one more year to do it.

Some Southwest Missouri towns, small or large, offer faithful contingents to their football programs at the high schools they attended.

“There’s no better feeling than being on that field on Friday nights, under the lights, all the fans on your side, just cheering for you,” Diamond senior Zachary Roughton said.

Along with Napier and Roughton, Joplin’s Josiah Hazlewood, New Heights Christian Academy’s Logan Decker and Carl Junction’s Tony Stewart talked about their senior season and the feelings of heading into their last season to play with their high school peers in front of their hometown faithful.
