Sports: The floodgates open on new season

Aug. 27—Football season began like the first few drops of a rain shower last week but this week the floodgates are open.

Last Saturday, I was, thanks to the Dish Network DVR able to keep up with the action, downing a few snacks along the way.

This weekend, we add the first weekends of the high school season. It seems like only yesterday, I was standing on the sidelines of AT&T Stadium when the Malakoff, Tigers captured the state championship. This Friday, I’m off to Henderson to see Athens take on the Lions, a former district foe, who gave them a toe to toe challenge last year before the Hornets turned them away.

The first games are usually hot and steamy, but 7:30 p.m. feels a lot different from 2:30 p.m., which is the kickoff time for the Texas Longhorns against the Colorado State Rams on Saturday.

My guess is Bevo will have lots of water and maybe even air-conditioning in his end zone abode, but the 100,000 fans might be wilting in the Austin heat, forecast to hit 93 degrees by game time.

That’s only about four degrees more than they’re predicting Saturday in Fort Collins, Colorado, home of the Rams.

The Aggies have the good sense to play at night this week, hosting Notre Dame. The two teams have been playing football since the 1800s, but have only met five times, with the Aggies winning twice. They beat the Irish in their only trip to Kyle Field. That was a 24-3 whipping in 2001.

If you go to Darrell K. Royal Memorial Stadium this season you’ll notice some changes to the concessions. They’ll have Grab and Go goodies to get you through the line quicker. Some special days call for special snacks, such as alligator when Florida comes to town.

When the Mississippi Rebels visit they’ll feature “mud pies at DKR.”

Trinity Valley is off for the next two weeks, they won’t be at Bruce Field again until Sept. 27 when Air Force…
