CANYON – As the West Texas A&M University (WT) Buffaloes prepare for their season opener against Sul Ross State University on Thursday, head coach Josh Lynn is optimistic about the Buffs’ prospects for the upcoming season. Reflecting on the team’s progress since last year, Lynn shared his thoughts on the recent training camp, the team’s preparation, and his expectations for the season ahead.

Lynn is coming off a 3-7 season in his inaugural year as WT’s coach. He came over from Nebraska–Kearney, where he compiled a 35-25 record over six seasons. After starting 2-1 last season, WT slumped to only one win in its last seven games, finishing with a 2-6 conference record.
Sul Ross State is moving up from Division III to rejoin the Lone Star Conference (LSC), which it left 49 years ago. The team finished 4-6 last season, including two games against conference members Eastern New Mexico and Western New Mexico. Expectations for the Sul Ross State Lobos are tempered, with the team expected to be at the bottom of the conference in its first year after making the leap in division. Senior wide receiver Vicente Luevano and senior defensive back Quincy Blair are considered two of the Lobos’ top players, as they were named to the LSC’s players to watch list.
Lynn spoke about what he deemed a successful offseason.
“Man, it’s good to see everybody back. Just football today,” Lynn said, brimming with excitement. “I thought we had a good camp. The energy throughout was outstanding, and coming over from year one to year two, there was a lot of carryover.”
