How Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi emerged from backup to Colorado State football’s star quarterback

Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi’s statement of intent came even before his first start of the 2023 season.

The quarterback, a redshirt freshman at the time, had come in relief in the first game of the season for the Colorado State football team.

He showed flashes late in a lopsided loss to Washington State. The Rams then had a bye and BFN, as he’s affectionately known to fans, was named the starter.

His first start of the season? At rival Colorado.

Daunted? Fowler-Nicolosi now admits that, yeah, he was pretty anxious all day leading up to the late-night kickoff.

But when it came time to hit the field for warmups, Fowler-Nicolosi was all business.

He prowled the sideline during warmups, glaring into the pro-Colorado crowd like a caged tiger waiting to pounce.

The Rams ultimately lost that game, but Fowler-Nicolosi showed more than enough to make it clear he unlocked the offense in a way no one had seen in the first 13 games of Jay Norvell’s time at CSU.

It clearly marked the beginning of the BFN era.

“If your quarterback is not ultra-competitive, you’re going to have a problem along the way,” Norvell said. “He’s super competitive.”

From buried on the depth chart to the talk of college football

What a wild year it has been.

Fowler-Nicolosi entered 2023 preseason camp as a backup and maybe not even at No. 2.

A year later, he is the clear starter for CSU and considered a star on the rise. He’s become nationally famous in college football for turning down lucrative NIL offers to remain with the Rams.

Now the expectations are not to just continue what he did a year ago, but build on it and lead the Rams to the postseason.
