Aug. 30—I feel like this might be the written version of the Grandpa Simpson meme screaming at the clouds, but as I drove through Wyomissing on the way to Bob Wolfrum Stadium on Saturday morning, I found myself thinking about Saturday high school football.
There is something about what the Spartans have built in the afternoon when not many teams play. It gets teams out of their normal routine, while Southern Columbia was probably least bothered by it since it was a first-week game, and playing its scrimmage on Saturday morning the previous week.
Most teams aren’t used to playing in sunny, warm conditions, and with the regular season pushed back, there isn’t much chance of winter weather before Halloween.
However, I think there is another great reason to go back to Saturday games: Teams are always looking to get fans to their games, and with most teams playing on Friday night, Saturday games would go a long way with that.
I used to think it was smart of Line Mountain to do that. For a while in the early part of this century, the Eagles played all of their home games on Saturday nights, and when I first started this job 32 years ago, Lewisburg used to play Saturday nights at Christy Mathewson Memorial Stadium.
But my preference, again, wouldn’t be for Saturday night games. I’m a big proponent of afternoon games on Saturday. Now, I will admit the beauty of playing at Wyomissing — what a beautiful small city — might be part of my little soapbox message. Whatever planner had the idea to plant all those trees throughout the town should have gotten a raise.
