Vanderbilt vs Virginia Tech score today: Live updates, highlights from Week 1 game

Vanderbilt football will face Virginia Tech in its season opener Saturday, marking the start of coach Clark Lea’s fourth season.

After finishing 2-10 in Lea’s first season and 5-7 in the second, the Commodores regressed to 2-10 in his third season in 2023. That prompted a large roster turnover. Lea fired both coordinators and opted to instead call the defense himself. On the offensive side of the ball, Lea brought in Jerry Kill and Tim Beck from New Mexico State. Joining Kill and Beck was Diego Pavia, the expected Vanderbilt starting quarterback. However, the Commodores did not officially name a starter ahead of the game.

The team captains for the 2024 season are Pavia, wide receiver Richie Hoskins, safety Marlen Sewell, safety CJ Taylor and linebacker Langston Patterson.

The Commodores are continuing to play at FirstBank Stadium amid ongoing construction.

Vanderbilt vs Virginia Tech predictions

Diego Pavia plays better in games than he did in practice, but that’s not enough to keep Vanderbilt’s offense from looking hapless against an experienced Hokies squad considering what the Commodores lack at the skill positions. Virginia Tech wins, 21-10.
