ANN ARBOR, Mich. — It wasn’t a romp of a season opener for Michigan football though the score certainly looked that way in the end. But it took the Wolverines all four quarters to put Fresno State away — either an indictment on the maize and blue or perhaps a vote of confidence for a Group of Five team that often gives good teams trouble.
We won’t really know the truth until Michigan takes on Texas next week, but certainly Fresno State head coach Tim Skipper walked away impressed with the Wolverines.
After the game, much of Skipper’s postgame press conference was spent talking about the maize and blue. Here’s what he had to say about Michigan after losing 30-10.
Thoughts in the opening statement

You have to give it up to those guys. A lot of respect for them. They’re fundamentally sound. Their defense gives a lot of looks. Their offense is trying to challenge us, and then just got out a hand a little bit at the end there. But proud of our guys, proud of them, but no moral victories. We’ve got to bounce back.

We needed to get that stop and they did a great job. They started running the rock and started breaking some tackles, and then they ended up punching it in. Kind of was a gut punch on us a little bit there. But other than that drive, we did a pretty good job.
Overall impressions of Michigan

Yeah, a lot of size. I’m gonna tell you that right now. We didn’t know which quarterback was going to play. Prepared for both of them. They got a little salt and pepper. They can mix it around a little bit. You have to get used to what you’re going to get. I think their defense is really good. A lot of good looks.
