LUBBOCK — Former Central quarterback Maverick McIvor became the first Abilene Christian quarterback to throw for 500 yards against an NCAA D-I opponent on Saturday in a 52-51 loss to Texas Tech.

McIvor completed 36 of 51 passes for 506 yards and three touchdowns but was tripped up on a two-point conversion that would have won the game in overtime.

The Wildcats came into Jones AT&T Stadium as considerable underdogs and a win would have been the biggest in ACU history.

McIvor graduated from San Angelo Central in 2018 and committed to play at Texas Tech. Injuries sidelined McIvor and kept him out of the quarterback conversation at Tech, promoting a transfer to ACU.

In his first full season with the Wildcats, McIvor completed 56% of his passes for 1,972 yards and 17 touchdowns.

Injuries also plagued McIvor at Central, forcing him to sit out most of his senior season. As a junior, he recorded his best season throwing for 3,415 yards and rushing for 870. He accounted for 52 total touchdowns, was named District 2-6A Offensive MVP and an All-State honorable mention.

The Fort Davis native transferred from a small Class 1A program where he played six-man football as a freshman. He played wide receiver his first year at Central, hauling in 35 passes for 532 yards and seven touchdowns.
