Know the foe
The Terrapins, who beat the Spartans, 31-9, last season, opened their season Saturday with an impressive 50-7 blowout of Connecticut. New starting quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. went 20-for-27 for 311 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions as Maryland posted a dominating 629-310 edge in total yards while forcing three Huskies turnovers and committing none. Senior wide receiver Tai Felton put up monster numbers: 178 yards and touchdowns of 18 and 75 yards on throws from Edwards. Coach Mike Locksley enters his sixth year in College Park after guiding the Terps to back-to-back eight-win seasons and three straight bowl wins. MSU is 10-4 all-time against its former Big Ten East rival, but Maryland won the previoustwo meetings by a combined 58-24 score.

Work in progress: New coach Jonathan Smith continued to reiterate one of his favorite phrases: “This ain’t a game of perfect.” That particularly was true as the Spartans sweated out a nail-biting finish after Aidan Chiles’ goal-line interception set up a one-score game after three quarters. MSU showed resolve against an improved FAU team in coach Tom Herman’s second year, and that perseverance is something to bankroll for close games…
