Sep. 2—GREENSBURG — The Chargers welcomed a Top 10 opponent for their home opener in Week 2 of the high school football season. Class 2A No. 4 Eastern Hancock took advantage of a couple North Decatur miscues to grab a 20-0 halftime lead en route to a 34-8 victory. The Royals improve to 2-0 and the Chargers drop to 1-1.
Eastern Hancock took the opening kickoff and found the endzone at the 8:52 mark to go up 8-0 on the Elijah Edon 11-yard pass to Evan Wheeler and 2-point conversion pass from Edon to Austin Brown. After a miscue on a North punt, the Royals took advantage of a short field with Mark Kube scoring on the 2-yard run to make it 14-0.
In the second quarter, Edon carried the ball three yards for the touchdown to extend the Eastern Hancock lead to 20-0 at the half.
North got things going to start the third quarter with an opening drive ending in a touchdown pass from Mason Morris to Owen Eldridge. Corbin Thackery added the 2-point conversion to cut the deficit to 20-8. Eastern Hancock added two more touchdowns to put the game on ice.
For the Chargers, Thackery led the ground attack with 37 yards rushing. Simon Barber added 34 yards and Brayden Yeager had 21 yards. Hayden Koehne rushed for 10 yards. Morris passed for 104 yards and one TD. Barber had one catch for 39 yards. Hunter Meister caught one pass for 34 yards. Eldridge and Koehne both had 17 yards receiving.
Cooper Parmer led the defense with seven tackles. Eli Trenkamp and Nolan Burkhart both had 5.5 tackles. Thackery added five tackles.
The Chargers face another conference opponent in the Monroe Central Golden Bears in Week 3.
