Miami Hurricanes save the ACC from total embarrassment in Week 1 | D’Angelo

The ACC can thank the Miami Hurricanes from complete embarrassment.

Now that’s a sentence we have seen. Never.

But here we are, after Week 1, and the ACC is on the verge, of having one representative in the 12-team college football playoff, and that is the team that has dragged down this conference for the last two decades.

That’s because the ACC’s two signature programs, Florida State and Clemson — are a mess.

Florida State? Has any team in the country been a bigger mystery, and disappointment, than the Seminoles? FSU has dropped its first two games to Georgia Tech and Boston College after going undefeated in last year’s regular season and being hosed by the committee when it left them out of the playoff.

And this collapse is system wide, from coach Mike Norvell, to transfer quarterback DJ Uiagalelei, to both lines — especially on defense, which was touted as having multiple first-round draft picks — to … we’ll stop there.

As for Clemson, as long as Dabo Swinney continues to dismiss the transfer portal, its days of competing for national titles are done. The gap between the Tigers and the elite programs continues to widen as Swinney sticks to his outdated beliefs.

And that played out in front of a national television audience Saturday in Georgia’s 34-3 beat down of the Tigers in Atlanta.

Note to FSU and Clemson: If you enter litigation with a conference over media rights, you do not want to be said conference’s biggest disappointments before the books are closed on the Labor Day weekend. Not a good look.

As for the ACC’s periphery playoff contenders … we won’t know anything about Louisville until it’s done with its embarrassing preseason schedule that includes Austin Peay and Jacksonville State. North Carolina State trailed FCS Western Carolina entering the fourth quarter in its opener.

Forgot about Virginia Tech,…
