Today is Sept. 4, 2024. And on this date in Texas history, the Longhorns opened the 2016 football season with a memorable win over Notre Dame.

Playing on a Sunday night, Texas recorded a 50-47 victory at the expense of a Notre Dame team that was ranked 10th in the Associated Press’ preseason poll. D’Onta Foreman opened his Doak Walker Award-winning season with 131 rushing yards and Shane Buechele threw two touchdown passes while becoming the first true freshman to start at quarterback for Texas in a season opener since Bobby Layne in 1944.

But the star of the evening was backup quarterback Tyrone Swoopes. Rotating into the game to give the Texas offense another rushing option, Swoopes ran for 53 yards and three touchdowns out of the “18-Wheeler” package. His 6-yard touchdown run in the second overtime session sealed the victory.

This classic contest between Texas and Notre Dame was listed by author Cory W. Palm in a recent book about the 100 greatest games in Royal-Memorial Stadium’s history.

Following the upset of Notre Dame, the unranked Longhorns catapulted to the No. 11 spot in the AP poll. However, the Longhorns failed to capitalize on that early-season momentum. Texas ended the 2016 season with a 5-7 record and head coach Charlie Strong was fired.
