Bishop Verot has undergone a massive upgrade of its sports program since Greg Coleman took over as athletic director three years ago.
A new video scoreboard was installed last year at Viking Stadium. Renovations were made to the main gate to welcome fans. And there’s a new slogan on the Verot weight room, with a clear and concise message: “It’s just different here.”
Except there’s a school not far away and one that’s a lot more prestigious than Verot that has been using that same slogan for a while.
The Venice football program has had a longstanding tradition of success since coach John Peacock took over in 2007, with that same message ― “It’s just different here” ― being at the forefront of Venice Indian football. Peacock’s program has captured three state football championships in five title appearances and has won over 80 percent of its games, proving it’s different in Venice.
When Peacock got word that his phrase was being used around 69 miles south, he decided to take one from Verot to return the favor, one that’s been posted frequently on his X account: “#BigBoyFootball”. The Vikings started using that hashtag after former Verot defensive backs coach Rod Gadson said it during last year’s 50-14 win over eventual state champion Cardinal Mooney.
Despite not playing this century, the two sides will square off on Friday in what’s expected to be a contest filled with physicality and angst. It’ll be the first meeting between the two since 1998, a game in which the Indians won 21-9.
