How GVSU football put together an in-your-face season opening win

ALLENDALE – When the Grand Valley State football team sprinted out of the locker room for the second half of its season opener, the skies opened up and it started to rain.

But it had already been raining points for the Lakers on the scoreboard.

GVSU pounded Central State University 58-0 in the season opener on Thursday night in front of a packed crowd at Lubbers Stadium.

“It was the ultimate give-all-we-got win,” GVSU coach Scott Wooster said.

The running game put up stunning numbers. GVSU had 56 carries for 546 yards, which is just three yards short of the school record. Five different running backs scored a touchdown.

“We came in with a good game plan,” quarterback Avery Moore said. “We just found that running the ball was the most effective thing. You saw our (offensive) line today. They were just killin’ it. They did such a great job.”

GVSU led 30-0 at halftime. It was the program’s biggest shutout since 1989 when they beat Valparaiso 91-0.

The Lakers wore vintage powder blue jerseys, too.

“The senior class is gonna put their stamp on this in these cool vintage blue jerseys, paying homage to the past,” Wooster said.

Defense was stellar

Grand Valley’s defense was so good that it only allowed 84 yards of total offense.

“It’s awesome,” junior linebacker Anthony Cardamone said. “Starting strong and starting together. There’s so much depth on that defense … just flying around out there. It’s awesome to see. Great way to kick off the season.”
