SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: Drayton Pouncil looks forward to being senior leader

Sep. 6—As the time to hang up his high school cleats nears, senior linebacker and running back Drayton Pouncil looks to work hard and be a leader for his team in his last year wearing black and gold.

Pouncil began playing football in third grade and remembers falling in love with the game. He explained that since he was young, he pushed to get better and keep playing even when he had a bad game or practice.

“I started playing football in the third grade,” Pouncil said. “Over time, I found out I was really good at it, so I just kind of kept playing.”

His work ethic and attitude translated to success on the field in his McAlester playing career.

Pouncil became a member of the varsity team his sophomore season and has been a force on both sides of the ball ever since. As a junior, he registered 22 total tackles, six tackles for loss and four sacks at linebacker and 260 yards and two touchdowns at running back.

He attributes his success to his biggest supporter, his mother. He expressed that she is always there for him on good days and bad and that she is his biggest fan on and off the field.

“My mom has been my biggest mentor because she’s always been there for me,” Pouncil said. “Through thick or thin, she’ll always be there.”

Reflecting back on his time as a Buffalo, Pouncil explained that upsetting Bishop McGuinness in the Class 5A state semifinal game in 2022 is something he will always remember. In that game, the Buffaloes reached the state title game for the second consecutive year for the first time in program history.

“The Bishop McGuinness game two years ago is my favorite memory,” Pouncil said. “That was the most intense game of my entire life and biggest game of the year.”
