Blockers Alex Luna, Colten Freeman set tone for McCutcheon football in first win of season

LAFAYETTE ― McCutcheon senior offensive lineman Alex Luna knows his left and right sides are covered when tight end Colten Freeman enters the game.

The two share a bond off the field as well, with Freeman’s family taking in the senior captain who has overcome hardship and is producing major results for the Mavericks.

“Colten has been there for me since my first year of high school and helped me out in stuff,” Luna said. “He’s more like a brother to me.”

Together, their strength and power put Hamilton Heights on its heels within the opening eight minutes of Friday night’s football matchup at Ellison Stadium.

McCutcheon scored 17 points in the first quarter en route to a punishing 31-2 victory for its first win of the season.

Sophomore Tyler Brigham ran for a 34-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, senior Broderick Arnold had three interceptions while senior Malachi Kenner repeatedly got pressure on the Hamilton Heights quarterback.

“I sat back at 20 yards and I can come down hill,” Arnold said. “I was just trying to read everything.”

McCutcheon (1-2) brought a physicality and energy level that Hamilton Heights couldn’t match. The run game was blown up successfully by the Mavericks, who group tackled after it allowed 34 points last Saturday to West Lafayette.

“Defensive coordinator coach Brandon Ruemler and his staff did a phenomenal job of keeping things simple so they could play a little bit faster,” McCutcheon coach Josh Strasser said. “We had some missed assignments the last two weeks. We wanted to prevent that and get our defense to play a little bit faster.”

McCutcheon sealed the victory after a 60-yard fumble recovery and touchdown by junior defensive back Keegan Rice with 1:58 in the fourth quarter.
