Sep. 6—MITCHELL — Dakota Wesleyan football will vie for a new piece of hardware on Saturday.
The Tigers open their Great Plains Athletic Conference calendar facing off against Mount Marty for their home opener in the inaugural Dakota Railroad Rivalry game. DWU also looks to bounce back following a road loss on opening week, and give Alex Kretzschmar his first win as a head coach.
Here’s a look at the Tigers’ matchup on Saturday:

Last meeting: DWU won 51-45 in double overtime on Sept. 30, 2023, in Yankton.
Last time out: DWU is coming off a 34-3 road loss against rival Dakota State last Thursday to open the year. Mount Marty was victorious in its opener on Saturday, defeating Culver-Stockton (Mo.) 42-14.
Notes: In the Massey Ratings, DWU is ranked at No. 66 and Mount Marty is at No. 51 among NAIA football schools. … The last two matchups between the Tigers and Lancers have been decided by a combined 10 points, with DWU winning 38-34 at home on Nov. 5, 2022. … This is the first game for both teams to be billed as the “Dakota Railroad Rivalry,” paying homage to the old DWU-Yankton College matchups and how fans traveled to both venues by train back in the early 20th century. The now-defunct Greyhounds were 36-29-7 against the Tigers.
