The 12-team playoff era of college football is underway and the first games of the 2024 season provided plenty of intriguing storylines and developments to digest. But Saturday’s schedule, which features 75 Week 2 games involving at least one FBS team, offers up a little bit of everything now that what’s happening on the field starts to carry more weight than the speculation of preseason polls.
There’s a top-10 showdown between No. 3 Texas and No. 9 Michigan in the noon (ET) television window and then a top-25 showdown between No. 12 Tennessee and No. 23 North Carolina State in primetime Saturday night. There are conference games in the Big Ten, SEC, ACC and Big 12, and regional non-conference rivalry games (Iowa State at No. 21 Iowa and Colorado at Nebraska). There’s even a familiar Group of Five conference playoff hopeful (Boise State) getting a chance at a marquee win against one of the Big Ten’s newest arrivals (No. 6 Oregon) to wrap up the weekend.
We already saw a few unexpected results in Week 1, and there seem to be more opportunities for upsets this week as college football sorts itself out in this first month of the first season with a 12-team playoff.
