‘Building a legacy’: Community rallies around new Faith Christian football program

LAFAYETTE – Faith Christian sophomore linebacker Colin Smith, like many of his cohorts, is still trying to find his identity as an athlete during the Eagles maiden voyage into 11-man football.

The game has changed for Faith Christian which didn’t have a football program until playing 8-man football in 2023.

And since then, the craving for football at the Pre-K through 12th grade Christian learning institution has frothed with enthusiasm. The Eagles, in just two years, are in the process of creating competitive and cultural football traditions established by its neighbors in Tippecanoe County at Lafayette Jeff, Harrison, McCutcheon and Central Catholic.

“We are a small school and we are trying to build,” Smith said. “We are trying to build and encourage all the middle schoolers, all the elementary school kids and maybe they’ll be good.”

Faith Christian brings on veteran coaches

Learning to master the basics of tackling and blocking is what Faith Christian is striving for during its first year of 11-man football with a majority of its players having never played the sports competitively before. The Eagles won’t be eligible to play in an IHSAA playoff until 2026.

A fact coach Jesse Shale explained to the current juniors and seniors on the team before the start of 2024.

“It’s been a great experience because the guys that have come out this year, a lot of them didn’t play last year and they are seniors now,” Faith Christian coach Jesse Shale said. “They’ve played soccer, they’ve ran track together. Now they are doing this new thing together as they lay the foundation of a program We’ve reminded them multiple times that we are setting the foundation.”
