COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Kristian “Big Dooley” Phillips played every snap in Michigan State football’s season-opening win over Florida Atlantic.
Phillips, the starting right guard, landed on the injury report and missed Saturday’s 27-24 victory over Maryland. And coach Jonathan Smith said the redshirt sophomore is expected to miss the remainder of the season with a lower-body injury.
“It was big,” Smith said of losing the 6-foot-4, 319-pound Phillips.
Phillips is the fourth long-term injury loss for the Spartans coming out of the first game. Wide receiver Alante Brown (upper body) and defensive backs Dillon Tatum and Khalil Majeed also are expected to miss most or the rest of the season, Smith said Monday.

MSU also had two other defensive backs get hurt and leave the game Saturday at Maryland. Arizona State transfer Ed Woods did not play after halftime, and fellow cornerback Chance Rucker left the field with an apparent right arm injury after making a tackle late in the third quarter and did not return. Rucker’s replacement, LSU transfer Jeremiah Hughes, also suffered an apparent upper-body injury midway through the fourth quarter but returned to the field.
Wide receiver Jaron Glover also left the game midway through the third quarter after making his sixth catch of the game. He did not return but remained on the sideline in uniform.
Phillips’ injury forced offensive line coach Jim Michazlczik to shuffle his linemen throughout the game.
