California Golden Bears defensive backs Miles Williams (4) and Marcus Harris (5) celebrate a defensive stop as Auburn Tigers take on California Golden Bears at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn, Ala., on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2024. California Golden Bears leads Auburn Tigers 14-7 at halftime.

Auburn football suffered its first loss of the 2024 season on Saturday, dropping a 21-14 contest to California at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

It was a rough day for quarterback Payton Thorne who passed for just 165 yards and four interceptions. After spreading the wealth in last week’s win over Alabama A&M, Thorne completed passes to four wide receivers for 112 yards. The team’s leading receiver, Cam Coleman, caught two passes for 53 yards.

Auburn’s defensive backs were picked on as well. Cal quarterback Fernando Mendoza connected on 25 passes for 233 yards and two touchdowns. Four of California’s receivers caught every pass thrown their way including Jonathan Brady and Nyziah Hunter, who caught four passes each.

Auburn fans, as well as fans of other teams, shared their opinions on X (formerly Twitter) postgame. Here is a look at the best social media reactions to Auburn’s loss to Cal on Saturday.
