Ohio State notebook: Running for TDs ranks very highly for Howard

Sep. 8—COLUMBUS — File this under things you didn’t expect to hear.

After Ohio State’s 56-0 win over Western Michigan on Saturday Ohio State quarterback Will Howard said he gets a bigger thrill from running for a touchdown than passing for a touchdown.

Howard passed for one touchdown and ran for his first touchdown in an Ohio State uniform on Saturday night on a 6-yard called play in the second quarter.

“I love it, man, I love it,” he said about running the ball into the end zone.

“I love getting in that heavy stuff and running the ball. I always say it’s great to throw a touchdown. It feels awesome, it’s a great feeling. But there’s nothing quite like running a touchdown in, feeling the crowd and celebrating with your teammates in the end zone, there’s no feeling like that. It’s pretty awesome,” he said.

One of the reasons Ohio State brought Howard to Columbus through the transfer portal was his ability to run the ball but he has run the ball only five times. His touchdown was his only carry Saturday night.

SPEED AND POWER: Howard said the reason running backs Quinshon Judkins and TreVeyon Henderson are a big problem for defenses is they combine power and speed.

“I think the thing that makes him and Tre so dangerous is that they’re not only fast and quick but they’re strong. They both are multi-faceted,” he said.

They’re so interchangeable it’s unreal. The coolest thing about those two is there is like zero ego. Those two are very tight and I know they get along super well. Those two kind of embody what this culture is about. They work together. They don’t care who gets all the rushes or who scores the touchdowns.”
