Saturday in Norman was not the fun affair for the Oklahoma Sooners that many in and outside the program thought it would be.
It likely had to do with the Sooners needing a crucial first-down conversion late to fend off the Houston Cougars, who had pushed them to the brink. Brent’s boys picked up the 16-12 win. That score is a strong indication of how weird that game was.
All that aside, the most important outcome is that the Sooners won the game. Fixing issues after a win is infinitely better than fixing issues after a loss.
We enter a new week as the Sooners prepare for their third nonconference tuneup. The program’s first SEC conference game is just two weeks away.
Before we turn the page and shift focus to the incoming Tulane, it’s time for our weekly stock report to see who is trending up and down.
Stock Up: Robert Soears-Jennings
Everyone talked about Billy Bowman coming into the season as Oklahoma’s best defensive back, and they weren’t wrong to do so. Everyone knew and expected Bowman to be a player for the Sooners. The real question was who else at safety would become a star alongside him, and it mostly came down to Peyton Bowen and Robert Soears-Jennings. So far, the early returns show that Spears-Jennings is blossoming into that star.
It’s the second week in a row in which he was Oklahoma’s highest-graded player on defense after his five tackles, tackle for loss, and interception performance.
There was a coverage bust on a miscommunication…
