Titans power past Panthers – Yahoo Sports

Sep. 9—The defending Class 4A champions brought their A-game Friday against a Panthers team still finding their identity. Lewis Central (2-0) won the bout 44-8. A tough start to the schedule, two Class 4A teams, leaves Creston sitting at 0-2 heading into week three.

“Lewis Central is the number one ranked team in the state for a reason,” Creston offensive coordinator Garrison Carter said. “They have extremely talented kids all over the field, and they are really well coached. They do a great job playing disciplined football.”

On the opening drive, senior Titans running back Chance Chappell carried the ball the first two plays. On first-and-10 at midfield Quarterback Brady Hetzel took a shot downfield to junior Peyton Phippen, but it was Creston’s first-year 6-2 defensive back Jake Hoyt who came down with the interception.

“That was big,” Creston head coach Brian Morrison said. “It’s the first series against an all-state quarterback, player of the year in 4A. A turnover against any team is what we want — to get the ball back to the offense. That was good for us, good for our team, good for our defense.”

Offense

Though the Panthers struggled to make headway on offense against an incredible Titan defense, Carter said the team improved in a variety of ways from week one.

“I think we all left this game feeling a lot better about ourselves and our trajectory than we did after week one, he said. “We learned a lot about our kids and our identity moving forward.”

The Titans kept the run game locked down, holding Creston running back Weston Trapp to only 22 yards on 11 carries. Sophomore quarterback Tanner Ray added 21 yards on the ground via scrambles and…
