Why Arkansas football needs more from pass rush after loss to Oklahoma State

FAYETTEVILLE — Despite the loss, there was a lot to like from the Arkansas football defense in Saturday’s 39-31 double overtime defeat at the hands of Oklahoma State.

The Razorbacks didn’t give up a touchdown until the fourth quarter, holding the electric Ollie Gordon II to 49 rushing yards on 17 carries. Jaheim Singletary had an impressive interception, and the Cowboys failed to cross the 400-yard threshold of total offense.

However, there is one creeping concern developing for Travis Williams’ defense through two games. The Arkansas defensive line, which was supposed to be one of the team’s biggest strengths this fall, is having a difficult time getting pressure on the quarterback.

“We’ve got to win one-on-ones up front, and we did not on Saturday,” Sam Pittman said Monday.

According to Pro Football Focus, the Razorbacks only recorded three quarterback hurries against Oklahoma State and failed to record a sack. Anton Juncaj recorded the only quarterback hit.

There are a lot of factors contributing to those middling stats. Oklahoma State thrives on getting the ball out quickly, running plenty of screens and fade routes that relieve pressure on Alan Bowman to against a pass rush.

But Pittman thought there would be more opportunities to attack the seventh-year quarterback, and the Hogs failed to create havoc despite an admirable performance from the defense.
