JACKSONVILLE − Jacksonville State football brought in a couple of transfers from Power Four programs over the offseason, highlighted currently by Antonio Carter, who has made an impact in his first two games with the Gamecocks.
Carter, talking with media for one of the first times since coming to Jax State, discussed some of the differences between playing at Notre Dame and with Jacksonville State and coach Rich Rodriguez.
“Honestly, just the hard edge part,” Carter said. “I think it was hard for me coming from Notre Dame to hear. Just to make sure that I’m in shape. Training camp was rough for me, but it’s definitely helped make me a better player. I think I’m in better shape.”
Hard edge is the saying that Jax State uses to embody the culture of the program, wanting to be a tough, hard-nosed program. Rodriguez and his fall camps are a fast paced experience designed to get as many reps as possible in the allotted time, and it doesn’t help that they are done in the Alabama August heat and humidity. The heat, humidity and direct sun can send temperatures well above 90 ℉, even as the Gamecocks try to mitigate that with earlier practices.
The heat and humidity wasn’t a huge adjustment for Carter as he his from Florida but after playing at Notre Dame for a season and Rhode Island for four seasons before that, he did have to adjust once he came back to the south.
“I’m from Florida but playing football up north for a minute. It definitely was an adjustment to come back down south, for sure.”
