Shedeur Sanders clarifies comments after loss vs Nebraska: ‘I put that on myself’

Shedeur Sanders knows he must choose his words wisely.

At any given point, the things he says can be taken out of context and used to perpetuate an entirely different narrative.

That’s what the Colorado quarterback believes happened Saturday night.

“It was just a rookie mistake,” Sanders said of his pick-six after the Buffaloes’ 28-10 loss to Nebraska. “That’s what it was. It’s small things like that that just can’t happen. But that stuff happens so we just have to bounce back from it and learn from that situation.”

Those comments were perceived by many as a slight to Colorado true freshman receiver Drelon Miller, who the game-changing interception was intended for.

That wasn’t actually the case, according to Sanders.

“I can understand and that’s definitely my fault for even giving them room to even be able to play tricks on words,” Sanders said Tuesday in a video posted by Overtime. “I think they just took it and ran with it whatever way they wanted to, you know, what would probably get them the most clicks or whatever.

“I remember saying it was a rookie mistake. I didn’t say the rookie made a mistake. I’m saying that’s a rookie mistake like that’s childish, I should’ve never done that (make that throw). But I’m not going to go on social media and go argue with them fans about that. I have, and am thankful to have, a platform to where I’m able to really express and say what was actually said instead of people just making up stories and just doing anything just to kind of divide the team. But I put that on myself also because I gave them the room to where I could understand why they took it like that. But that wasn’t the intention, though.”

Sanders was sacked five times and threw his second interception of the season (had just three in 2023) in the loss to Nebraska. He’s completing 68.1% of his passes for 689 yards and…
