Sunday afternoon’s season opener didn’t quite go as planned for quarterback Daniel Jones and the Giants.
Cheers from the 100th anniversary celebration and start of the new year quickly turned to jeers as the offense failed to get much of anything going in an embarrassing 28-6 loss to the Minnesota Vikings.
Big Blue didn’t play well as a whole, but Jones was one of the biggest reasons behind their loss, as he completed just 52 percent of his passes and threw for most of his 186 yards in garbage time.
He also tossed two interceptions — the first of which was returned 10-yard’s by Minnesota’s Andrew Van Ginkle for a touchdown off a screen pass — and the second of which was to safety Harrison Smith in the end zone.
Simply put — it was ugly — and things got so ugly for Jones and the Giants that at one point even his opponent started feeling bad for him as the boos drew louder and louder from the sellout crowd at MetLife Stadium.
“We heard the boos and we were like ‘okay now we’re good on our side,’” Vikings LB Jonathan Greenard said on the Power Trip Morning Show. “When it got really loud to where it was as loud as it would be on third down if they were on defense, it was kind of bad.
“We kind of started to feel a little bad for him as we’re still just completely just taking away everything that he wants to do, so it’s good to be on the other side of it and it’s our job to not be on that side of it.”
Certainly not the type of things you want to hear about your starting quarterback as he opens up a massive make-or-break campaign.
Luckily for Jones, he’ll have another opportunity to turn things around, as head coach Brian Daboll told reporters that he’ll remain under center for their Week 2 divisional matchup with the Washington Commanders.
But if he can’t do that against a defense that was torched for 37 points and 289 passing yards last week the cries for Drew Lock or Tommy DeVito are only going to get louder and louder.
