Sep. 11—GRAND FORKS — The UND football program, ranked No. 10 in the latest FCS Top 25 poll, faces Idaho State on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Potato Bowl at the Alerus Center.
Here are eight things to know about the Bengals from Pocatello.
Idaho State is coached by Cody Hawkins, who’s in his second season as the head coach in Pocatello.
Hawkins’ dad, Dan Hawkins, is on the staff as a director of player and staff development. Dan is a former head coach at Colorado and UC Davis, among other stops.
Dan’s father-in-law is Robert Hokanson, who played basketball and ran track at UND and was selected to the school’s all-1950’s basketball team. He was captain of both teams in the 1958-59 season and an all-North Central Conference pick in basketball in 1958.
Hokanson, a native of Morris, Minn., lived in old Memorial Stadium, which was UND’s primary home for football from 1927 to 2000. After recently being razed, UND’s football coaching offices now sit on the same site in a new facility known as Hyslop at Memorial Village.
Almost everything went right last Saturday in Idaho State’s dismantling of NCAA Division II Western Oregon, but the Bengals did appear to suffer an injury at center.
Alex Ramirez, one of the more experienced Idaho State offensive linemen, suffered a leg injury on the first snap of the game.
“I can only say so much, but he’s going to be out awhile,” Idaho State coach Cody Hawkins told the Idaho State Journal.
Idaho State has trotted out four quarterbacks already this season but the Bengals appear to have settled on senior Kobe Tracy, a Utah Tech transfer.
Tracy didn’t start in the opener against Oregon State but was the most effective thrower.
Tracy is a native of Chubbuck, Idaho, a northern suburb of Pocatello.
Idaho State has also played at quarterback Jordan Cooke, Hunter Hays and Jackson Sharman.
