Oct 7, 2023; Tempe, Arizona, USA; Colorado Buffaloes cornerback Carter Stoutmire (23) against the Arizona State Sun Devils at Mountain America Stadium.
The loss of Shilo Sanders for two to three weeks is a massive blow to the Colorado football defense.
A vocal and experienced leader with five years of college football experience under his belt, Sanders was the Buffaloes’ leading tackler in 2023. The starting safety tied for the team lead in solo tackles (six) during Colorado’s season-opening win over North Dakota State before suffering a forearm injury in Nebraska that required surgery over the weekend.
Sanders missed just one game due to injury last season (he started the other 11) and the Buffs gave up 48 points and 498 yards of offense to USC on that day.
This time around, it’s sophomore defensive back Carter Stoutmire who will fill in for Sanders, starting with this weekend’s Rocky Mountain Showdown rivalry game vs. CSU.
“Carter is big, physical, can play corner, can play safety, can run and had a couple phenomenal open-field tackles (vs. Nebraska),” Deion Sanders said of Stoutmire on Tuesday. “He’s the future. He’s a kid who went and got out of high school and he’s been doing a wonderful job.”
Stoutmire notched five total tackles (four solo) in Week 2 after Shilo Sanders left the game in the first quarter. He had an impressive fall camp and was part of the reason why Colorado pitched a shutout in the second half against Nebraska.
The 5-foot-11, 205-pound DB played in nine games (one start) for the Buffs last season, recording 11 total tackles (one for a loss). In his first career start, he blocked a kick during a road win over Arizona State.
Colorado’s defense might be without the son of a former pro for the next couple of weeks, but Shilo will be replaced by another athlete with NFL genes.
Stoutmire’s father, Omar, was…
